Weekly Family Day Trip: Strasburg Rail Road & the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania

Hi friends! Welcome to week six of my weekly series exploring kid-friendly destinations within a 90-minute drive of Westminster. We have done an amusement park, a children's museum, a historic river town, a waterfall and lake, and a big city zoo. This week we traded city streets for farm country, and all aboard was the only way to go.

The Strasburg Rail Road bills itself as America's oldest continuously operating railroad, and it still runs real steam locomotives through the heart of Lancaster County's Amish farmland. Right across the street sits the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, home to more than a hundred historic locomotives and train cars under one enormous roof. Together they make one of the most charming, laid-back day trips we have done so far, about 75 minutes from Westminster with the kids entertained the whole way.

The Vibe

There is something timeless about it. You pull into Strasburg, and suddenly you are in a small country railroad village with a red station house, a model town, and tracks stretching out across bright green fields. The whole experience moves at a gentle, unhurried pace, which is exactly the kind of day a tired parent needs. Kids get the thrill of a real, loud, steaming locomotive, and grown-ups get to relax in an open-windowed wooden coach watching farms and fences roll past.

The two attractions are an easy, stroller-friendly loop. You can ride the train, lap the museum, grab a bite, and still be home in time for bath and bedtime. On a nice day it is one of those trips where everything just clicks.

What to Do

Ride the Real Steam Train

The main event is the 45-minute steam train ride out through the countryside and back. You settle into your wooden coach, the engine bell starts to ring, and with a few chuffs and a big plume of steam, you are rolling past cornfields, red barns, and a horse-and-buggy or two. Kids can sit by the window and wave, and the open-air feel makes it easy to take in the view. Our kids spent the whole ride pressed to the glass.

Tour the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania

Right across the street, the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania is a train fan's paradise. Inside one giant hall you will find more than a hundred historic locomotives and passenger cars, from sleek streamliners to the massive iron beasts that crossed the state for a century. The Stewart Junction children's area is a real hit, with hands-on railway activities that keep the little ones busy, and there are restoration shops where you can watch teams working on the trains. Even on a rainy day, this place shines.

Let the Kids Run the Tiny Trains

The museum and the rail road both have model train displays that kids love. There is a delightful miniature rail town where little trains chug through a tiny countryside, and the attention to detail has everyone from toddlers to grandparents leaning in for a closer look. It is a quiet, air-conditioned way to rest the feet between the big experiences.

Catch a Seasonal Special Train

The Strasburg Rail Road leans into the seasons in the best way. Throughout the year they run themed rides that kids go wild for, including Day Out with Thomas the Tank Engine, the Easter Bunny Train, a Pumpkin train in the fall, and the Santa's Paradise Express at Christmas. If you can time your visit around one of these, you have just upgraded a great day into a genuinely core memory. Book those early, because they sell out fast.

Stroll the Model Town & Grounds

Between rides, the grounds around the station are worth a wander. There is a miniature model town to peek into, a boardwalk, and plenty of green space for the kids to run a lap. Grab a snack, sit on the platform, and just watch the engines get turned around and re-coupled. For little train lovers, standing close enough to feel the heat and hear the chuff of a real locomotive is pure magic.

Visiting Hours & Admission

• Railroad Museum hours: Open Wednesday through Saturday, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM (last entry 3:30 PM), and Sunday from 12:00 to 4:00 PM. Closed Monday and Tuesday.
• Museum admission: About $10 for adults, $9 for seniors, and $8 for youth ages 3 to 11. Children 2 and under are free, as are active military and their immediate family. Parking is free.
• Strasburg Rail Road rides: The schedule is seasonal and trains run daily through much of the season, generally from about 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Book tickets ahead, because popular weekend times fill up.
• Train ticket prices: They vary by seat class, roughly $17 to $39 for adults. Kids 2 to 11 ride at a child rate, and children under 2 ride free on a lap.
• Location: The rail road is at 301 Gap Road, Ronks, PA 17572. The museum is at 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, PA 17579, right across the street.

What to Pack

• Snacks and water — there is food on site, but a stash of snacks manages the wait at the station and between rides without a hangry meltdown.
• Good walking shoes — you will move between the station, the museum, and the grounds, so comfy shoes keep everyone happy.
• A light jacket — the museum halls can run cool, and late-summer evenings in farm country turn crisp fast. A light layer covers both.
• A stroller or wagon for little legs — the museum is big and the grounds are spread out, so it helps to have somewhere for tired toddlers to ride.
• Camera or charged phone — the train pulling into the station with steam rolling is a photo you will want to keep.
• Hand sanitizer and wipes — handy after a day of climbing around, pressing glass, and touching every railing.

Tips for Parents

• Book train tickets online before you go. The train schedule is seasonal and popular times sell out, especially on weekends and during the special themed rides. Lock in your seats and your timing first.
• Do the museum either before or after your train. They are right across the street, so plan to ride at one end of your visit and tour the museum at the other. That way you are not rushing back and forth.
• Go on a weekday if you can. Weekdays are noticeably calmer and less crowded, which makes everything more relaxed with younger kids.
• Pair it with the Amish countryside. The drive in and out is half the charm. Leave a little extra time to slow down, admire the farms and markets, maybe grab some farm-stand goodies on the way home.
• Watch for a seasonal special. Thomas, the pumpkins, the Santa train... these sell out fast, so if a themed ride is on your family bucket list, book it as soon as dates open.
• Plan for about 4 to 5 hours. That is the sweet spot to ride the train, tour the museum, wander the grounds, and grab lunch without wearing anybody out.

The Bottom Line

The Strasburg Rail Road and the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania make a wonderful, low-key family day trip about 75 minutes west of Westminster. A real steam train ride through Amish farmland, a giant hall of historic locomotives, and a whole village of little-guy charm add up to a day that feels like stepping back in time. It is creative, fun, and refreshingly slow, which is sometimes exactly what a busy family needs.
