Weekly Family Day Trip: Port Discovery Children's Museum in Baltimore, MD

Hi friends! Welcome to week two of my weekly series exploring kid-friendly destinations within a 90-minute drive of Westminster. Last week we hit go-karts and laser tag at Adventure Park USA. This week we are heading to the city for something totally different.

Port Discovery Children's Museum is tucked right in Baltimore's Inner Harbor, about 45 minutes from Westminster. If you have kids ages 10 and under, this place is basically a three-story indoor playground disguised as a museum. And on a rainy or scorching summer day, it is exactly where you want to be.

The Vibe

Port Discovery is all about hands-on, brains-on fun. Every exhibit invites kids to touch, climb, splash, build, pretend, and explore. There are no velvet ropes or quiet hallways here. This is the kind of place where you walk in, hear giggles echoing off the walls, and watch your kid's eyes go wide as they realize they have free rein over three floors of pure discovery.

The centerpiece is the SkyClimber, a four-story climbing structure that winds up through the atrium. It looks intimidating from the ground, but it is designed for kids ages 5 and up, with plenty of nets and platforms so parents can watch from below (or climb up themselves if they are brave enough). My kids spotted it the second we walked in and made a beeline for it before I could even buy tickets.

Best Exhibits by Age

Ages 0-3: Chessie's Grotto and Tot Trails

The lower level has a Chesapeake Bay-themed soft play area called Chessie's Grotto with gentle climbers, tiny slides, and sensory walls. It is gated, so toddlers can roam safely while older siblings tackle the big stuff. Tot Trails on the second floor is another dedicated toddler zone with age-appropriate activities. If you have a baby or toddler, this alone is worth the trip.

Ages 4-7: Wonders of Water, Kick It Up, and The Port

Wonders of Water is a splashy, hands-on exhibit where kids can build dams, float boats, and experiment with water flow. Bring a change of clothes, because someone is definitely getting wet. Kick It Up is an indoor sports court with soft balls and hoops for burning off the wiggles. The Port area includes a pretend diner (Dockside Diner) where kids can "cook" and "serve" their parents, plus a market and fishing boat for imaginative play.

Ages 8-10: SkyClimber, Adventure Expeditions, and Galactic Builders

Older kids will gravitate toward the SkyClimber (the four-story climb is a rite of passage), Adventure Expeditions with its hands-on challenges, and Galactic Builders where they can design and construct using unique building materials. If you have a mix of ages, the museum is big enough that everyone can find their zone.

What to Pack

• Change of clothes (seriously) -- the Wonders of Water exhibit is fantastic and your child will leave damp. Throw a dry outfit in a Ziploc bag.
• Grip socks or barefoot-friendly shoes for the climbing areas
• Snacks and a reusable water bottle -- there is a cafe on site but lines can get long around lunchtime
• Light jacket -- the museum is air-conditioned and some exhibit areas can feel cool
• Hand sanitizer and wipes -- shared exhibits are a germ-sharing reality

Tips for Parents

• Arrive at 10 AM sharp. The museum gets busy by 11:30, especially on weekends and rainy days. Early arrival means first dibs on the SkyClimber and shorter lines at the water exhibit.
• Split and conquer. If you have kids in different age ranges, one parent can take the toddler to Chessie's Grotto while the other tackles the SkyClimber with the older kids. Then swap. The museum is easy to navigate and you can cover a lot in a few hours.
• The Oasis is your friend. Near the SkyClimber on the first floor there is a quiet zone called The Oasis with books, Legos, and calmer activities for kids who need a break from the sensory overload. Use it when someone hits a wall.
• Plan for 3-4 hours. That is the sweet spot. You can hit most exhibits comfortably without feeling rushed or overstaying the kids' patience window.
• Combine with Inner Harbor fun. The museum is steps from the harbor promenade, so after you leave, walk over to see the water, catch a glimpse of the USS Constellation, or grab ice cream at one of the nearby shops. It makes the whole outing feel like a bigger adventure.

The Bottom Line

Port Discovery is an absolute win for families in Carroll County. It is close enough for a same-day trip (45 minutes each way), the hands-on exhibits keep kids engaged for hours, and the location in the Inner Harbor means you can easily turn it into a bigger Baltimore adventure. At about $26 a ticket, it is a solid value for the quality and variety of the experience.
